Sodium Permanganate is a strong oxidizer with the chemical formula NaMnO₄, Purple liquid, density 1.36-1.39g/cm³, soluble to water/ethyl alcohol/diethyl ether, strong oxidant, similar to KMnO₄.
It can be used as oxidant, disinfectant, bactericide, purifying agent etc. Such as PCB surface cleaning, API, jean-washing, drinking water purification, electroplating degreasing, EMD, metal cleaning etc. It also widely used in chemical industry, metallurgy, environmental protection, textiles, water treatment industry etc.
Sodium Permanganate is highly oxidized, and it's reduction products vary according to the acid and alkali of the medium:
it is reduced to Mn2+ in acidic solution;
it is reduced to MnO2 in slightly acidic, neutral and alkaline solution;
it is reduced to Na2MnO4 in strong alkaline solution, and compound MnO2 is further generated with Mn2+, as a characteristic reaction of manganese compounds.
Sodium Permanganate and concentrated sulfuric acid contact is easy to explosion, and organic matter contact, friction, collision will cause combustion, and heat will release oxygen. Used as oxidant, fungicide, antidote, can also be a substitute for Potassium Permanganate.
Health Hazard
Invasive way: Inhalation, feeding, and percutaneous absorption.
Health hazards: Sodium Permanganate is strongly irritating. High-concentration exposure severely damages the mucosa, upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. After contact, induce burning sensation, cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, laryngitis, headache, nausea and vomiting.
Environment Hazards
Hazardous characteristics: A strong oxidant. An explosion occurs in sulfuric acid, ammonium salt or hydrogen peroxide. Glycerol, ethanol can cause spontaneous combustion. The danger of combustion and explosion caused when contacting or mixing with reducing agent, organic matter, flammable materials such as sulfur and phosphorus.
Combustion (decomposition) product: Manganese oxide.
